INDONESIA

Communities of change

PK Hephata in Indonesia is a haven for people living with disabilities. Here they can live safely, receive treatment and support, and learn vocations. It’s a place where spouses are met and families commence too! 

Through ALWS you:

  • Support the vital work at PK Hephata
  • Advocate for people with disabilities and champion government
  • Counsel families
  • Provide vocational training.

Program specifics: Your work in Indonesia through ALWS is multifaceted. Here you support people living with disabilities to develop livelihoods or business sources, strengthen Disabled people’s Organisations, mentor DPO teams, create networks, advocate to government for inclusive government services, facilitate training on the rights of People living with Disabilities and raise community awareness of human rights e.g. celebrate International Disability day (3rd December).

ETHIOPIA

Life Giving Water

Water is life! Devastatingly, much of Ethiopia is drought-prone and food insecure, suffering the impacts of climate change. Ethiopians are currently experiencing their fifth consecutive failed rainy season.

You can assist the creation of reliable water sources through ALWS:

  • Construction of canals
  • Constuction of water storage facilities
  • Installation of pumps

All used for agriculture and to keep people hydrated and healthy.

Program specifics: Through ALWS you can support local communities to expand irrigation canals, equip farmers in modern farming techniques and protect small scale irrigation catchments from floods. Beneficiaries will also participate in climate change forums and campaigns and undertake training.

SOMALIA

Education for All!

Since the time of Martin Luther and the Reformation, Lutherans have advocated for equal education for all people. In Somalia, ALWS works specifically to provide inclusive education for children.

Through ALWS you can:

  • Fund teacher training in inclusive education
  • conduct inter-school competitions for children with disabilities
  • run advocacy campaign sessions, and
  • provide support and counselling sessions, including vocational training, for families of children with disabilities.

Program specifics: Through ALWS you can train teachers in inclusive education, facilitate inter-school competitions, provide literacy and numeracy education for caregivers of children with disabilities, provide counselling and support to families, provide vocational training for families of children with disabilities.

NEPAL

#MeToo - Empowering Women

Legal frameworks exist in Nepal to protect all people – including women, children, and people living with disabilities. Unfortunately, social and cultural practices don’t align with these frameworks.

Through ALWS you can help change society and reduce gender-based violence:

  • Through education of community members on human rights and social protection
  • Activitism campaigns to challenge discrimination and exclusion
  • Educate on existing government social services and policies
  • Business opportunities for women, that give visibility AND autonomy

Program specifics: Through ALWS you will train community members on human rights, social protection and conflict management, support community-led joint advocacy campaigns to challenge discrimination and exclusion; train community members on government social services and policies; support community level dialogue regarding sexual and gender-based violence; Enhance female participation in leadership roles; Grow entrepreneurship skill development, business planning and start-up support to establish livelihoods.

BURUNDI

Bridges of Resistance

Ranking 187th of 191 countries on the Human Development Index, Burundi suffers from both natural and man-made disasters: floods, landslides, deforestation, social unrest. Yet it opens its borders to Congolese refugees fleeing war.

Through ALWS you:

  • Strengthen local capacity to respond to disasters
  • Equip farmers in modern farming practices
  • Enhance food security and income
  • Create market networks

Program specifics Through ALWS you will grow local capacity to respond to disasters (creating plans and training); upskill farmers in crops and methods to increase yields and withstand climate impacts and create networks to enhance market opportunities.
